Album Spotlight: Blackberry Smoke - Find a Light

There are going to be a lot of words written about Blackberry Smoke's new album Find a Light. I'm going to save some bandwidth.

If you're a fan of Blackberry Smoke, you'll be pleased. If you've never heard Blackberry Smoke and you like Southern Rock, you'll be pleased. If you don't like Southern Rock, skip.

It's really that simple. Go buy the album, download or pay for your streaming.

So here's some pirate metal from Alestorm:

  1. Okay, so I'm just curious about this. I just finished reading SCM's review. And I have to say, I like this album, but I don't get the intense love it's getting. I just hear good Southern Rock, but it doesn't stand out to me as anything incredibly special. What am I missing? Is it the melodies> The Lyrics? Is BBS one of those bands you have to see live to appreciate? (I'm totally willing to buy into that because some of my favorite bands, I was just "meh" on until I saw them live)

There are some great moments on this album! But for me, Blackberry Smoke lacks the killer melodies and excellent storytelling of Turnpike Troubadours, or the blues/rock edge of, say, Whiskey Myers. Maybe my taste for heavier music is clouding my judgement or something? I just feel like I'm missing something here!

    1. Carrie,
That's why I didn't write much about it. It's a fine album, not a bad song on it, but nothing that really stands out as something that moves me. All the gushing, I don't quite get, I thought *Holding All The Roses" was a better album.

I'm sure the comment below is pretty accurate, but I can't confirm as I've yet to be able to see them live. Like you, I think it's a good Southern Rock album. And I'm glad that there are still bands still playing good Southern Rock. That's where I'm at.

  2. Yes you MUST see them live and it all comes together. The melodies are relentless once it "kicks in" so to speak. Charlie Starr is a once in a generation talent. This is no exaggeration. I saw them for the first time in 2011 and didn't know w single song. It was a small club and I was a couple feet from Charlie. I've seen everyone over nearly 40 years and they blew me away! They have that IT factor as a band that very few do. In the time since I've met so many people who echo my story exactly. I've also gotten to know the band a little bit and they are great people.
Go see them and I'd be very surprised if you didn't have an epiphany of sorts.
